lazy list blogging is my favorite!

so yeah, I'm going to do a list blog entry again.  Next time I won't take the easy way out, though I love it this way!

1.  It's really nice to work on fast internet for a change.  I don't remember if I've mentioned it before or not, but at home I work on a broadband card because we are just out of reach for broadband internet (like we had at the house) or DSL.  And right after we moved last year, in desperation I used dial-up for awhile until we had the 2 macbooks then I decided I needed a broadband card!  So, it works well for the most part but right now I'm on campus using their wifi and so I'm reminded how much better that can be.  As a result, it changed my plans just a bit because I was going to start with updating Flickr a little more but realized I should take advantage of the fast internet and blog.

2.  Sock knitting - I finished my Mom's socks and they are pretty.  Now for the embarrassing part.  I seriously considered not showing anymore pictures and just quietly mentioning that they were done because of this.  I knit them wrong, entirely wrong and not just these, but the other pair of 'Embossed Leaves' that I knit as well.  I feel so stupid even though it makes sense to me how I made the mistake I made.  I always do everything I can to avoid knitting from charts for a couple of reasons but mainly because I'm blind and can hardly see the symbols and the graphs start to run together (even if blown up) and I just respond better to memorizing the knitting shorthand written out (and in my normal obsessive state, I check the chart knitting over and over and ...) and so now, the chart has bitten me in the ass for hiding from it!

Dsc00011_3_2

I knit the pattern reading the lines, from right to left, left to right, right to left and so on.  Like I said, since I always avoid charts, I didn't know that when knitting in the round you only read the chart right to left unless otherwise mentioned since you are in fact, always on the right side.  This makes sense to me after thinking about it, I mean how hard is that right?  But, since discovering this mistake (the very day I completed the socks and was so pleased with them!), I've looked at several patterns and noticed that nobody really offers that information for those who might not know, like me.  I discovered it when I was reading through the Pomatomus pattern and Cookie A. is very helpful in mentioning that.  The only other place I read anything about it, as I searched for proof to soothe myself that I wasn't just overlooking it EVERYWHERE, was in Knitting Vintage Socks, I think - I think.  I'll double check this when I get home, but I don't think it was in Favorite Socks and they are the only two books (because I was looking for sock knitting books) I looked at and then tons of magazine patterns and some online patterns.  In addition to that being embarrassing - more embarrassing is that I can barely tell when I look at the socks.  Seriously, I am so blind even with my glasses!  I think part of what makes it hard to tell is the variegated yarn and this was also the case with the first pair, but if I stare long enough I can tell.

Dsc09993_2

So now, what do I do?  I mean, they are done and they are beautiful lace socks but I think they are not Embossed Leaves.  So, what now?  I'm considering ripping the entire pair to do again because that was the point of this pretty yarn that I chose but like I said, they are pretty and my Mom will still like them.

Dsc00011_2

Other sock knitting going on, Red Hat socks - I typed red hot twice before getting red hat ...

on the needles, red hat socks

This is the second socks of this pair.  The yarn is, I think, Sock Memories or something similar from Knit Picks - it's older, I don't think they have the same line anymore.  I'm knitting them on US #2's.  This second sock has been ripped out twice because of ladders.  The combination of the yarn and needles doesn't really respond well to my ladder preventing tricks.  Actually the yarn and needles aren't a great combination, a little squeaky.  But, I was concerned that if I switched there might be a noticeable gauge difference from the first sock.  Still, I may switch needles, especially with needing to rip out again.  This time I'm ripping because I made the leg 2 to 3 inches longer than on the first sock.  It didn't seem like it when I was comparing before I started the heel flap but oh well.  They still knit up quickly.  They are a gift for DB's mom who does the Red Hat thing. It seemed like there was more about knitting but now I can't think of anything.

3.  This weekend is a wool themed event, more about the history and textile use than sheep and yarn inspired.  Still, DB and I may do that this weekend.  And Sunday, there is another local political event that I'm going to.  It will be to see someone I've already seen, but I'm excited all the same.

4.  Today is Candie kitty's 5th birthday!  I give the kitties tuna or some other special treat (actually, often) especially on birthdays and anniversaries (when they came to live with us) and tell them it's their special day all day.  So they probably think I'm their crazy cat person-mama!  Anyway, Candie is our only baby that we know for a fact what day she was born on so it's fun.  I was trying to get pictures of her to put up for her birthday but my camera battery was deader than I thought so that's for later.

5.  School stuff is stressful, too stressful for me right now I decided - actually a few weeks back I decided but couldn't figure out what, if anything, to say here about it.  Last term in itself was unbelievable but then I got it in my head that I could complete 17 hours, then 13, now none even though I was going crazy with the 6 hours last term.  I'm not just talking about stress like the worrying about what needs to get done and staying caught up - though the staying caught up on reading is a problem too, what with the not reading much anymore and having the attention span of a fly.  Because they have a short attention span, right?  I think so.  Anyway, beyond that normal stress I mean physical stress also.  I had a major cold/sinus infection, maybe the flu I don't know, twice in four months which is unlike me.  I started having problems with my hair - thinning a lot and losing about 3 times as much, in handfuls, as I usually do (and I already lose more than what seems normal in a day).  I found that part of that was that I was anemic - that has to be associated to problems I have with the PCOS which is okay at the moment.  After going through lots of details and hair counts, my dermatologist thought the hair loss was stress that matched things going on a while back.  So, through all of that the school stuff was not helping anything improve.  Also, for years now, I have gotten these little bumps on my hands when I'm stressed out - they aren't hives.  Anyway, I found some information about them online recently and apparently they are 'under the surface' all the time, but anxiety and stress do bring them to the surface.  And they itch like crazy and burn and sting.  But, they weren't something I really got often as in weekly until this last two terms of school.  And the problem with going to the doctor to see if anything can be done about them is that one minute they're all over the place and maybe an hour later they're down to one or gone - or still there two days later.  There's no telling.  And last, there is the stomach problems and headaches that I've had for a long time, but all acting up more and more this year.  The headaches especially, I had gone years without them and they've slowly crept back into my life the last couple of years - not to mention the anxiety attacks creeping back in too.  So there you have it, probably much more than you wanted to know about my health!

So, I guess that's it for now.  I'm going to sort out more pictures, I just have about a half hour before DB gets out of class.  Then we're going thrift shopping, yay!  Actually, I'm just looking for one thing but we both love browsing through the thrift shops. Happy Weekend!

let's try this

pretty little flowers from my outing at the park
sweet pink laced petals - macro.may9

*yay, it worked. I was trying out linking the photo back to Flickr. I couldn't find anything on Typepad or Flickr about how to do this so I was studying the source code from another blog. V.cool.

I'll blog a real post later today. I'm also going to do a bunch of upgrades - yuck, I usually try to avoid them. But, I brushed aside a note earlier in the week about QuickTime not working with the iTunes upgrade that I did (because I was trying to fix a sound problem on my Macbook) but thought 'oh, it won't effect me' and now it has. I bought a new video on iTunes and found that I can't watch it or any of my videos now although it shows the time passing as though it is playing. I want to see my 80's video, I've been all nostalgic with music lately!

So, yeah, more later today.

Friday thoughts

1. I hate looking at bills and budgets, like most people I'm sure. Except that sometimes when I'm so sick of it, I just start paying things anyway and let it all fall where it may.
2. I do not adapt well to change at all and I have no intention of improving that part of me. That said, my weekend has been ruined (unless something amazing happens Sunday) because of changes someone else made.
3. I have been knitting like mad on my Mom's Embossed Leaves socks even though I realized they won't make it her way by Sunday. (No pictures because I'm out blogging from my Blackberry). I really like this pattern, I think I've mentioned that repeatedly though.
4. I could eat noodley (great word!) and/or Asian food (any kind, I love all of it though lately I'm favoring Vietnamese & Thai) everyday. Unfortunately by the time I usually get out running around, they are in that weird in-between time of being closed, between lunch and dinner.
5. There is a student art show that I want to enter some photographs into but I'm not sure I will be able to. But, I just realized I'm in the perfect place to take some photographs to test. I've been much more eager since having one of my photos make into print and getting paid for it.

Well, I know this post was a bit odd but I'm scattered right now. I have pictures for later when I get home.

I hope everyone is having a beautiful weekend!

What American accent do you have?
Your Result: The West

Your accent is the lowest common denominator of American speech.  Unless you're a SoCal surfer, no one thinks you have an accent.  And really, you may not even be from the West at all, you could easily be from Florida or one of those big Southern cities like Dallas or Atlanta.

Socks On The Go & Other Stuff

The only projects on my mind (over the past month anyway) have been these 3 pairs of socks.  And just as I typed that, I realized that there actually is one more pair that I feel really bad about forgetting to photograph!  Before I forget, that pair is a late Christmas gift of Embossed Leaves in Cherry Tree Hill yarn.  I'll get them photographed later.  If I was actually knitting often, they would move along quickly like their beginnings.  That pattern is so pretty and moves so quickly.  Anyway, here are the other pairs I've got on the needles for the near future (again, I remembered one other pair ... grrr and ...).

Dsc00050

This is the other pair that is a late Christmas gift!  I finished the first one while visiting Texas in December and the recipient got to try them on for a custom fit.  But, I forgot to take more yarn to begin the second one and you know once I'm home, things move s-l-o-w-l-y.  I'm so close to finishing this pair though!

**So, I'm picking up where I left off on this post. I had to save it because I was unable to upload but the one photo the day I started the post.  Since then, I've finished the pair of socks!  I know, can you believe it?  So sad, since the new year began I've had little knitting mojo, or rather any at all for anything.  Anyway, they are lovely men's ribbed socks and I think my Mom's husband is going to love them.

Dsc00027_2

They turned out well, I know they look a bit odd in the photo but I promise they aren't.  I thought I'd taken wonderful, detailed notes so that I would know what numbers I used.  But, as is customary for me, when I located the notes (they had dived off into a pile of papers) the only thing I'd made note of was my cast on number, the heel flap numbers and what I worked the foot on.  The thing is, I had a hard time keeping the 2x2 ribbing on the instep, working smoothly, with the numbers that I settled on - that's where more details would have helped with sock #2.  Still, I got it done and they look alike.  -Here's a closeup to see the beauty of the yarn.

Dsc00032_2

The yarn has a lot of depth that doesn't show up in many of the pictures.  It's really a beautiful green, it is Fortissima yarn and took almost all of 2 skeins.  Now that I have experience with this yarn, I would probably knit the cuffs just a bit longer but I was worried about running out of yarn.  Also, I have to admit that aside from being very busy with school this year, there were 2 factors that had me dragging my feet on these socks.  First, the yarn was very splitty so it slowed down knitting a bit.  Then, to be safe in regard to fit, I switched from double pointed needles to 2 circulars when I started working the heel and instep.  I have a love/hate relationship with 2 circulars.  I always think it's going to be so much faster and easier when I start it, then I grow to resent the project.  But, once I start that way, I can't really stop because my gauge varies from one method to the other - I knit much looser on 2 circulars.  Regardless, I would consider using the yarn again because I think it's very resilient.  And like I said, I think that the recipient is going to enjoy them.  I've been meaning to knit him a pair of socks for years now. Other socks ...

Mosaic1153676

I'm not sure what yarn this is, it seems like it's Regia but I can't find the yarn band right now.  Anyway, I was just curious as to how the glittery fair isle would knit up and it had been sitting in my stash for a long time.  So, I picked it for yet another "first try" of toe up socks.  And I have to say, this method is the first that worked for me, getting me to the heel and beyond!  I used the toe up story from Ann Budd in the Summer 2007 issue of Interweave Knits and it's brilliant.  I did have a few problems with the heel but since I went back and reknit, it's better.  I think that most of it is just about me needing more experience with a short row heel.  I 'finished' it yesterday but it is too short and my bind off was too tight.  So, I just need to add a few more rows to make them proper anklets and learn a good bind off for toe up socks.  I think I started these in October or November but I'm not sure at the moment.  I checked Ravelry but I guess I never added the socks to my project list! Last is a pair of socks from Mountain Colors Bearfoot for my Mom.

Dsc00051

This yarn has beautiful variations in it.  My Mom chose it for a pair of toe socks with picot edges and I think short row heels.  That's sad, that is how long they've been languishing on the needles - I can't remember what heel she requested, will have to check on that.  Regardless, they are already at the heel length because they are to be short socks.  Before I continue on with these though, I will be picking up her Embossed Leaves again that I mentioned earlier. So, I think that about covers at least half of the socks - OH!  I almost forgot though, I actually cast on a new sock last night so that I could have a simple stockinette sock that will be knit with a heel flap so I have some mindless knitting.  Because you know, I have started knitting again.  So, here is that sock ...

Dsc00086_2

They are being knit from the Regia Kaffe Fassett line of yarn.  I'm pleased with the somewhat earthy stripiness (I say it's a word :p  ).

So, now that really covers every knitting thing that I have any photos to show you.  And I've gone on and on so I think that's probably it for now anyway.

I'm going to try to start posting a little something at least every other day, but it may not be much knitting.  I don't know, maybe it will be knitting!  Anyway, it would be good to post more often.

Byebye.

something

This has been on my mind for awhile now, what with all the news coverage everywhere.

Fortconcho_121707

A picture of Fort Concho, in San Angelo, from my last visit in December.  Many of the pictures on the news seem to be as unappealing as possible.  While I'm not sure what to say about it, it was/is a home of sorts.  I don't know.  Anyway, very pretty picture I think.  -And one more from my last trip.

Cotton_fields_121607

Cotton fields are one of those things, like Longhorns and cactus, that I forget are missing from my everyday scenery.  Things that are a nice reminder of where I come from, something I think about more and more the older that I get.

a sweet lazy day

Today was my birthday, yay!  I love birthdays!  It was a nice sweet lazy day with my guy, my kitties and a neighbor kitty who is adopting us as his favorite hangout.  We went out just for lunch and that was alright but the best part was just being home alone and doing almost nothing (I still have lots of homework reading to do, so there was some of that going on but not as much as was needed).  Ahhh, a good birthday.

*I can't find my camera cord so no birthday pictures right now.  I'm considering using some birthday money to buy a card reader, because I lose that cord much too frequently!

Happy weekend to everyone!

didn't forget

no, I didn't forget about posting more stuff but today was much busier than I anticipated (considering I didn't have class) so I didn't get new pictures.  tomorrow I am going to campus just to do some schoolwork while my guy has classes, but there is tons of good light there!  so, I think I may even take a break and blog from there.  just a break.  just a break.  that's a reminder for me actually, because most of my classes are online and I don't want to get distracted.  you know, there are so many things to distract you once you are online!

ok, so that's it for tonight.  I had a picture that I've tried and tried and tried and tried to upload for the last half hour and Typepad thinks not.  I've been thinking about moving to Wordpress but obviously I'm a glutton for punishment and lazy so I don't know.  see you tomorrow.

Catching Up, Spring Break Thrifty Finds

I've had little things to blog but the week I actually had time I was just too tired to think. So, I'm going to do a few separate bloggings rather than a really long one.

No knitting here, but there are some goodies. This was the best stuff that I've thrifted in awhile.

Dsc09984

I love this picture. The bright colors make the tools look like so much fun, like you just can't wait to use them! They were all under $1.50 too.

Then there was this crafty stuff:

Dsc09972_2

These were in good shape and seem like good stash yarn for projects that I haven't met yet. (Because I really do remember how to knit, I do.)

Dsc09978

Pink is one of my colors anymore. It's fingering weight and seems to barely (if even) have been touched so there is a lot to use! Now I can't remember and I'm too lazy to look but I think it is wool. There's part of a content label inside of the cone.

Dsc09976_2

The Bernat Scandia is a soft fat wool. It's a really nice mellow buttery (hee!) shade in person. This seems like it would be nice even as a hidden treat, like a hat lining. I think that since it's such a heavy weight that one skein would go far, given the large needles I'd knit it on. *As I looked to see if I could find a link for the Bernat Scandia, even though I'm sure it's well past its time, I found this cool vintage booklet for the Scandia. It's great finding vintage items like that while thrift shopping. My own guess wasn't quite as far back as 1961, just because it's in such good shape.

I hope I'm not losing you, I'm almost through!

Dsc09967_2

I've been buying cloth napkins that I want us to use. I thought these were really cute, I think there's four there. Now if I can just remember to put them all together so I can see what we have and put them to regular use! I've actually only had really good luck with finding nice sets of these at one of the thrift shops we go to.

And last, some cute shirts!

Dsc09956_2

These were my prize find at $2 a piece. I know, I know, I get e*x*c*i*t*e*d about these things! -This was the best picture I could get of the shirts, they are both hard colors to get right in one shot.

So there you have it. My last thrift shopping was very productive. Yay me :-)

Knitting tomorrow - really, even though it's small. I keep having trouble with Typepad letting me upload pictures but I wanted to post this before anything else. That's because these thrift shopping pictures have been sitting on my desktop now for two weeks so now they can be moved. Anyway I will post again tomorrow and update you on all kinds of stuff!

Sock a Month Knitalong

Dsc00031_2

I really think that I can finish these socks tomorrow/today depending on how you look at it - anyway I think I can be done by Monday night so I will have something completed finally. I will update tomorrow evening no matter what. They are actually quite a bit past the point of progress in this photo. And tomorrow I'm going to have a lot of sitting time because I'm going to see President Bill Clinton speak tomorrow. See you then.
